Imagine a world where you are continuously homeless. How about a world where your siblings or children are abducted for physical violence or rape? What about a life where over 80% of the capital is full of armed gang members that outguns the law?

Haiti’s economy took a big hit in 2010 when it faced its first major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2. Further cascades of natural disasters tormented the people’s infrastructure and public health to the point of collapse. While medical humanitarian and infrastructural aid was sent by major organizations, they later withdrew due to current events.

In 2021 Haiti’s president was assassinated, leading to political disarray and gang insurgency. Currently, over 80% of Haiti’s capital – Port Au Princé – is under siege of powerful gangs. The gangs are responsible for assaulting, abducting, killing, and sexually assaulting its population– including young adults and children.

Currently, gangs make it difficult for humanitarian aid organizations to reach the people. Even larger organizations such as the United Nations, Doctors without Borders, and The American Red Cross have retreated from the mission as a result of continued violence and barricades on vital resources such as fuel and water by gangs.

Perhaps the greatest tragedy in all of this is that much of the world is still blind towards the pain that Haiti endures. It has similar if not greater implications as to the current Gaza situation and yet receives less than tenth the publicity due to Haiti being a small island country.
